Do You Know When the First Nail Salon Opened in the U.S.? A New Book Has the Answer to This Question and More

A Woman Having Her Nails Done in a Salon

The first nail salon in the U.S. opened way back in 1878, over 135 years ago! A new book, Nails: the Story of the Modern Manicure by Suzanne E. Shapiro, has the details on this salon–it was called Mrs. Cobb’s Manicure Parlor, was located on West 23rd Street in New York, and charged $1.25 for a manicure.

The New York Post has a review of the book, which not only discusses nails of the late 1800s, but also traces the history of nail salons and nail art all the way through to current times. The book appears to be a fun resource that explains the trends and circumstances that have led to nail polish fashions enjoying the immense popularity that they have today.
