Nail art and polish have become international phenomena. The joy that comes with beautifying your fingernails is not limited to just people in the United States. Over at the Daily Express, beauty editor Amy Packer takes a brief look at nail art in the United Kingdom. She discusses the popularity of glitter polishes and a few other issues.
The 2013 fall and winter fashion collections have begun to debut, and as always, the nails are just as much fun as the haute couture. Nail artists bring their skills and decked out the models in a range of colors, textures, and designs, and just as fashion trends emerge, so do nail color trends.
The new mantra seems to be less is more. If summer is about the living being easy, the cold, crisp days of autumn and winter have brought a return to a more serious, understated look. Don’t panic – judging by the variety of hues, shapes, and colors out there, there is still plenty of fun to be had – though with a bit more restraint. Here’s a rundown of six of the biggest trends to hit the runway in fall and winter 2013.
1. Black is the New Black – Who can resist the perfect LBD? No one can, and the perfect LBN – little black nail – is alive and well. Consider some of the new black polishes, OPI’s Black Onyx, like butter LONDON, or like Union Jack Black. To get a truly opaque look, try layering a black shade with another deep, dark color like a Royal Navy. For the matte look, top your black lacquer with a matte coat like OPI’s Matte Envy, or if you prefer a shiny French finish, try swiping a glossy top coat just along the tips for a stunning statement. In our recent article on nail trends for Summer 2013, we highlighted several popular styles and one color in particular: orange. Well, in the last couple of weeks, another color has shown its popularity, especially among celebrities, and that would be blue. And in many cases, the bolder the blue, the better.
The Glamour beauty blog identified three celebs who have been seen in blue nails recently: Kat Dennings, Angela Simmons, and Bella Thorne. They’ve been seen on various red carpets with hues of blue on their fingers and toes. If you’re looking for a shade of blue to try yourself, take a peek at the new OPI Dining Al Frisco, part of OPI’s San Francisco collection for Fall/Winter 2013.
Have you ever wondered which nail art salons can turn your nails into “Instagrammable works of art”? Or perhaps you would just like to get some new ideas for nail designs?

The incredible popularity of nail polish that has developed over the past several years shows no signs of slowing down. Many in the fashion industry consider nail polish the number one women’s accessory, with several hundred millions of dollars of nail polish being purchased annually.
Here is an excerpt from a story on nail polish popularity by CBS Miami:
“It used to be lipstick was the hottest must have and now everybody is all about nails…$770 million dollars alone in America has been spent on nail polish, which is amazing. It’s 16% increase over the previous year…”
Part of the appeal of nail art, polishes, and even manicures is that they are affordable luxuries. Even in a tough economy, women can afford to splurge just a little to brighten up their nails.
This is from a few weeks ago, but it’s still worth checking out. Several celebrities showed up for the Met Gala in New York with eye-catching nail designs. Some of the notable women whose manicures stood out were Jennifer Lawrence, Katy Perry, Blake Lively, and Sienna Miller. From gold-accented talons to short, simple nails each with a single jewel, there were a variety of looks on the red carpet.
